Heavy Goods Vehicle Driving – (Rigid)

This course has been designed to provide business with personnel who are skilled as Category C licensed drivers of Heavy Goods Vehicles with Rigid Bodies and who have a DRIVER CPC Certification. (DRIVER CPC – Driver Certificate of Professional Competence)

The aim of the course is to provide the trainees with the skills and related knowledge in the rules of the road, driving a heavy goods vehicle – rigid body, care and maintenance of the vehicle, loading and unloading the vehicle, customer care and documentation and to develop their attitudes, personal effectiveness, and job seeking skills which will enable them to obtain employment driving rigid body heavy goods vehicles.

Entry Requirements

Education Requirements

While there are no specific entry requirements, centres must ensure that learners have the academic ability to successfully complete the program. Junior Certificate or similar.

Age Requirements

Applicants must be 18 years or over.

Learning Aptitude

A good standard of written and spoken English is essential in order to successfully complete this course and the associated assessments. The ability to correctly interpret and respond to written English instruction is essential for both the assessment and tuition elements of the programme.

Previous Experience

Full current Category B Driving Licence required. Irish learner permit Category C HGV required.

Non EU Citizens

Must have one of the following to be eligible.

  • Current Valid Stamp 4
  • Permission from the Minister of Justice to access and avail of training or employment
  • A valid Temporary Protection Certificate
  • L3 Educational Attainments or equivalent

Learning Outcomes

Manually lift and move objects and loads safely.
Drive the vehicle in accordance with the Road Traffic Act and the manufacturer’s specification for operation

Plan and achieve realistic work goals.

Understand the hazards arising from the carriage of dangerous goods to enable them to take necessary measures in the event of an incident. * Note: This module must be trained by an approved ADR Driver Training Course as approved by the Health and Safety Authority. ** Note: The ADR Driver Training Module is of a 1 week duration which will consist of the following: 3 Days: Initial Basic Driver Training Certificate 2 Days: Initial Basic and Tanker Specialisation Driver Training Certificate

Operate a counter-balance or reach truck in a variety of contexts; place and remove loads from structures at various heights.

Apply for the DRIVER CPC Certificate of Professional Competence Licence having completed the Road Safety Authority’s (RSA) Approved Training Programme.
